Here at BOXFOX, our resident Green Goddess (who also doubles as our COO), Jenni has engrained in all of us the importance of being eco-friendly. Since the beginning, our company has always made a conscious effort to go green, from reusable water bottles to recycling, and this week, we’re giving you 10 tips that we use here at HQ to help you make your office more eco-friendly. Because green is GOOD. //
Recycle, Recycle, Recycle
This might seem like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised how many companies don’t have a proper recycling system. At BOXFOX, our employees were given a tutorial on what can and cannot go in the recycling bin versus the trash can. This way, our employees are able to learn the system and apply it outside of HQ as well!
Embrace The Daylight
Living in sunny Los Angeles we have an advantage: constant light. Embrace the daylight, don’t turn on your lights unless you absolutely need them. You’d be surprised at how much energy you conserve in an office space. Plus, working in daylight just feels better than under harsh lighting.
Conserve Air Conditioning
If it gets too hot in the summertime, you can absolutely open your windows, and feel the cool air breeze. There’s no need to constantly be running AC, especially since most offices are so cold, people have to wear sweatshirts even when it’s sunny and 85 outside. AC should be turned on when you absolutely need it, cool off for a short period and then switch it off when the temperature is just right.
No Water Bottles
Encourage your employees to buy reusable water bottles for the office. They’re a great, eco-friendly investment, and companies like bkr make them stylish and affordable! Consider buying water refillable water jugs for your employees to keep hydrated, and get them refilled every 1-2 weeks!
Use hand towels, microfiber instead of paper towels
A quick and easy solution to not only significantly save in waste, but also in money. Gone are the days of splurging on rolls of paper towels, instead you can use hand towels and throw them into the washer when they get dirty.
Use eco-friendly cleaners and soaps (Green products)
Many offices use cleaners and soap that are equal parts fueled with chemicals as they are harmful for the environment. Consider brands that are made from natural, non-toxic ingredients so they are totally safe to use, and you’ll feel good about it, too!
Use Whiteboards
Why waste a ton of paper by printing project assignments or agendas? Buy a whiteboard and keep announcements or agendas on display. This will save you time and help the environment!
Go Green! (Literally) // Plant Power
Keep plenty of plants around in your office. Plants aren’t just beautiful, they also have so many benefits from reducing the carbon dioxide levels in the air, helping reduce levels of pollutants in the air, eliminating dust, and can also assist in keeping the air cooler.
No plastic silverware
Gone are the days of plastic silverware (and extra waste!). It’s all about reusable silverware, which is an easy fix for any office space. Whether you have a shared kitchen or keep your own silverware, this will not only help the environment, but reusing your silverware will also eliminate an unnecessary, extra expense in your life.
Bye, Bye Plastic Straws
Plastic straws are just one of the millions of items that end up in our oceans, and they’re usually in the top 10 items found in beach clean ups. Plastic in general is harder to break down than organic matter, which is exactly why a simple fix such as replacing the straws in your office with reusable, metal ones or using fettuccine as a stirrer for your coffee can be really beneficial to our environment in the long run!
