When we were little, my sister Anna and I would always joke about how our mom could talk on the phone for-ev-er. It seemed like she was always chatting away with one of her four sisters. And If Grandma called, by our math, we had about a gazillion M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I's to get ourselves into trouble. “Hey Anna, let’s go jump the fence and feed the cows!”

I couldn’t wrap my head around it then. What could she possibly be talking to Grandma about for that long? I guess it wasn’t until middle school that I came to appreciate girl talk and the magical healing powers of venting.

Looking back, I’m so glad my mom taught me to put that effort into my relationships. You have to check in with your people! And even when I’m so exhausted from the day and all I want to do is zone out on the drive home, that’s my phone time with my mom. That’s when I want to hear every single thing that’s going on in town, and what the family is up to, and how the Giants are playing. She keeps me in the loop about the drought, about all the aunts and uncles and cousins and babies, and recently her new pottery studio. I love it. I’m so thankful for the web she knits that keeps our family close. I know how much work that takes and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Happy Mother’s Day Mama. I love you <3
